Fuentek Names New Publications Manager

Laura A. Schoppe, president of Fuentek, LLC (www.fuentek.com), has announced that Carol M. Collins has joined the firm as the new publications manager. In this position, Collins will manage a team of writers, editors, graphics designers and web developers who produce marketing material for technologies that Fuentek markets and other various materials for the firm’s clients. Bringing more than 20 years of publications, communications and project management experience to Fuentek, Collins has often worked with patentable research and development technologies and has expertise in process and product development, life cycle management, training, writing, multimedia presentations, and telecommunications and networking technologies. Collins earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A native of Illinois, she resides in Raleigh.

N&O Parent Company Reporting Revenue Loss

McClatchy Co., the nation’s third largest newspaper chain, is reporting that October revenue fell by 17.8 percent as the slump in print advertising continues to weigh on its business. The publisher of Wake County’s only daily newspaper, The Raleigh News & Observer, said revenue fell to $176 million from $214.2 million last year. About 82 percent of its overall revenue comes from advertising. Classified ad revenue plunged by 35.8 percent to $40.4 million, led by employment ads, down 48.6 percent, followed by real estate at 41.5 percent and autos, down 30.5 percent. Retail ad revenue fell by 11 percent while national ad revenue declined by 13.9 percent. Online ads rose by 12.4 percent to $16.4 million. Excluding employment ads, online advertising revenue would have risen by 57.6 percent year-over-year, the company said.

Devils Ridge Charity Golf Classic Raises Record $33,000 for Prostate Cancer Charity

The Fourth Annual Devils Ridge Charity Golf Classic was held on Sept. 24th in Holly Springs. This event, hosted by the Devils Ridge Men’s Golf Association, was held for the benefit of the Prostate Cancer Coalition of N.C. (PCCNC) to aid in their fight against prostate cancer. A full field of 128 golfers had a great tournament on a beautiful sunny day, including breakfast, golf, lunch, golf prizes and a raffle. A feature of the tournament was signs on all 18 greens with Prostate Cancer Facts to promote awareness of the seriousness of this disease. Key facts included: 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer; 75% of P.C. deaths are preventable with early screening, detection and appropriate treatment; men should have a P.C. screening at least 1/yr. if: (a) over 50; (b) over 40 with a family history of P.C., or (c) African American; all men should have a baseline PSA blood test at age 35 and regrettably, currently only 40% of men take the recommended screening tests.
