Shearon Harris Expansion Being Challenged

Plans for expansion at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant outside of Apex in New Hill are being challenged via a legal motion filed this week with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on behalf of Durham-based NC Warn. The motion argues in part that federal law prohibits new units at Shearon Harris because the existing plant has violated fire safety regulations for 16 years and plans to remain in noncompliance for years longer as it seeks a relaxed, less expensive approach to fire protection. Shearon Harris is run by Progress Energy which provides power to Cary, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina.
