What makes a good news item? Basically, something substantive about an important event or development at your business or organization. Newsworthy topics include:
>> Launching a website
>> Introducing a new business/product
>> Receiving a certification, appointment or award
>> Celebrating an anniversary or promotion
>> Company restructuring
>> Publishing a white paper, article, videocast or podcast for public consumption
>> Announcing that you are available to speak on particular subjects of interest
>> Office relocation
>> Sponsoring or participating in a philanthropic event
>> Announcing a partnership, strategic alliance, merger or acquisition
>> You won a significant contract award
>> New staffers, board members or advisors
>> Issuing a statement of position regarding a local, regional or national issue
>> Company milestones
>> Announcing a retirement
>> Customer win
The basic elements of a news item include who; what; when; where; why; and how. Local newspaper stories follow this standard — a good idea is to read local newspapers closely to get examples of basic news story elements and where they appear in the story (i.e. don’t bury your lead).
Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, check out announcements of peer businesses to get an idea of press release structure. Keep in mind that plagarism is not acceptable; that said, after you read multiple news items you are sure to see structural similarities that you can replicate in your own posting.
Make sure your news item includes the name of a company representative who will be available for interviews if a reporter becomes interested in your release and want to talk with someone about a feature article he or she is writing. This is the holy grail of PR, and you have to be prepared for your press release having the ultimate success — generating interest on behalf of a media professional. Any delays in getting back to an interested reporter can inhibit your chances of getting positive media coverage now or in the future with the interested media outlet; even if you aren’t prepared right away to talk, let the reporter know you’ve received his or her query and will be able to speak in greater detail with them at a future date.
Be sure your press release has a writer’s contact name/email/phone number, and be sure to SPELL CHECK and proof your release before posting it to ApexBusinessNews.com or any other media outlets.
